Favorite albums of 201010) Kid Cudi - Man On the Moon, Vol. II: The Legend of Mr. RagerThis is the second collection of music from Kid Cudi. His contribution to another of my favorites, Kanye West, can be heard a lot on Kanyes ‘808’s and Heartbreak.’ Giving that album an icy, far removed, almost isolation feel… yet at the same time remaining very open and accesable to anyone who listens. With this album that feel is throughout, with Cudi dispensing very stream of consciousness lyrics.
9) We Are Scientists - Barbara It’s hard these days to find a no frills rock and roll album… Look no further then We Are Scientists. I’ve been a fan since their debut came out a few years ago, and with this record they remain true to their form with hummable songs that have a great groove and movement. My favorite song ‘Jack & Ginger’ features a simple synth line that is super catchy and exactly what you want to hear. They are great at delivering the guitar grit at times, and then adding in thought provoking, sometimes melancholy lyrics that gel perfectly with the melodic backdrop.
8) Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. - Record CollectionI’ve been a fan of Mark Ronsons for years. His debut album had some great covers of songs, and a few original numbers peppered in that showed signs of what was to come. With this album I think he dove in head first, and with the help of some friends (Q-Tip, Ghostface Killah, D’Angelo and Duran Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon among them) he really arrives at an amazing sonic palette. The synths are warm and analog, piercing the music with urgency. The drums are all big and live, with quirky samples added in throughout. (The deluxe version itunes LP version of the record comes with some cool video content, definitely worth getting).
7) Bruno Mars - Doo-Wops & HooligansThis is a great collection of music. The sonics are mostly pretty simple, with flourishes of some synth layers and additional horns etc. Touching on diverse styles like classic soul, do-wop Motown inflections, and even some reggae. The lyrics are mostly very simple and relatable to many types of people. Bruno Mars’ voice soars, and his hooks live on in your mind for days.
